Ultimo Prize Terms and Conditions

  1. The submission guidelines form part of the terms and conditions.
     

  2. Entrants must be Australian citizens or residents and between the ages of 18 and 30. Entrants can be no older than 30 by the
    31 December 2021. One entry per person is accepted.
     

  3. The entrant shall retain copyright for the work submitted.
     

  4. The submission must be an original work of poetry or fiction (prose) entirely by the entrant, with no material previously published or licensed for exclusive use in any form in any territory.
     

  5. The submission must be written in English.
     

  6. The submission cannot be under consideration with any other publisher or literary agent.
     

  7. The submission can be entered into other awards, but if it wins first place in another award, the submission will no longer be eligible and the author must withdraw their submission from the Ultimo Prize as soon as possible.
     

  8. Entrants to the prize must not be a current employee of Ultimo Press, Hardie Grant Publishing, Hardie Grant Media or
    Hardie Grant X.
     

  9. Late entries will not be accepted.
     

  10. Entrants must ensure that their submission does not infringe any existing laws, copyrights, licenses or third-party rights; does not breach any confidentiality obligations, non-disclosure agreements or official secrets; is not defamatory and does not breach any individual’s right to privacy; and that all statements put forward as fact in the submission are true.
     

  11. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Entry material will not be returned. 
     

  12. The winners will be contacted via email and/or phone.
     

  13. The winners grant Ultimo Press and Hardie Grant Books the right to use all or any part of their entry for the purpose of announcing or promoting the author as a winning entrant, or to promote the prize itself.
     

  14. The winners agree to take part in events and media activities to promote the prize.
     

  15. The 30 winning entrants will have their work published in an Ultimo Press anthology published in November 2021, and winning entrants agree to licence their entries for the published work. They will receive AUD $200 in prize money and a copy of the anthology on release of the book. All winners will receive a further $200 for every 7,500 net copies of the anthology. (This was modified 17/2/2021 to include additional remuneration on 7,500 copies sold.)
     

  16. Winning entrants agree to collaborate with the editorial staff at Ultimo Press on their entry to edit the work for publication. The final decision related to editorial decisions will lie with Ultimo Press, but an author of a winning work retains the right to withdraw that work if they are not in agreement with the editorial feedback.
